YOLO or YOL-Today? The Ultimate Bucket List.

Every day is a chance to live a beautiful, wonderful life.

We hear the terms YOLO (You Only Live Once), Carpe Diem, “Just Do It,” Bucket List Worthy-living, living life to “the max,” spreading your wings, experiencing awe, all the time.

Even without those catchy cliched taglines, the concept behind these terms is incredible, and incredibly basic. Yes, you only live once. Yes, it’s great to have a bucket list. Yes, you should seize the day.

But, these terms imply extreme activities. Must you walk on fire, swim with sharks, hike a glacier, and the like, to live a great life filled with scrapbook-worthy memories? Some advertisers, magazines, tour companies, and travel & tourism boards would like you to think so, and while those activities certainly are “once-in-a-lifetime” and bucket list-worthy, the truth is that each day is a chance to spread your wings.

Smile and laugh. Today. Seize the moment. Today. Look and do something outside your comfort zone. TODAY.

If you can afford these exotic trips or once-in-a-lifetime excursions, great! But don’t expect them to make you happy if you are not already. Truth be told, they will not make you any happier than you are and, if you can’t afford them, you may actually become LESS happy trying to pay for them.

What will make you happy? The day-to-day memories, everyday moments that make you smile, being mindful and living in the moment.

So, instead of “YOLO,” how about “YOLT.” You are only guaranteed today, so live for TODAY. Be better, stronger, more mindful than yesterday. Do something that is outside of your comfort zone, today. Laugh, smile, share time with those you love — parents, children, siblings, grandchildren, friends. TODAY.

That should be our ultimate bucket list.
